Poetry, Paintings, and Ponderings: Through My Eyes

Peace December 25, 2013

I know that it is difficult for many to make it through this time of year (myself included). Just know that you are not alone in your feelings, and that there is a brighter and better tomorrow. Take a deep breathe and take it one moment at a time. If being around relatives is difficult, just remember: YOU control how you feel. Do not give others that power. Do not allow yourself to fall into the trap of being reactive.

If you are alone (not by choice) try volunteering at a soup kitchen or shelter. You will be lifted by what your kindness can do for others.

I wish you all peace, love, and joy this holiday season.

  1. Great post! Holidays can be so rough for some of us who suffer from mental illness, and even for many who don’t! Your suggestion to work at a soup kitchen or shelter is fantastic. I have done just that, and the grateful faces of the homeless and/or poverty-stricken people (there but for the grace of God go I) when I set a steaming plate full of turkey with all the fixin’s on the paper-covered table in front of them was a gift I will always remember. Many of them grabbed me–at any other time I might have recoiled from their grimy hands and black fingernails–and blessed me….there is never such a blessing as the one you will receive from being kind to the destitute, whom most people despise. I would dare say that for a true Christian there is no gift that would have made Baby Jesus happier than to see his faithful out caring for the poor, the sick, the drug addict, the prostituted.

One funny story–I was serving Thanksgiving dinner at a mission in Seattle, when the cook suddenly got sick. Everyone panicked, so I thought I’d better “come out” about having been a chef at one time. Suddenly I was in the kitchen up to my eyeballs in turkeys, pots of gravy I could have drowned in, same with the mashed potatoes, in command of a gang of prep cooks I had never seen before, etc…..that was a VERY interesting Turkey Day indeed. After that I went home and went to bed πŸ™‚

Be well, Rainey, keep breathing, let the weirdness roll off you like water off a duck’s back, and if you are not a recovering alcoholic, I recommend a reasonable dose of egg nog, preferably with rum or bourbon πŸ˜€

    Peace,
    Laura
